Each prepared serving: 20g complete dairy protein and 100mg coffee caffeine, 0g added sugar. Freeze-dried Arabica plus whey and milk protein, designed as one drink, not a protein powder with coffee waved over it. Sweetened with monk fruit extract and steviol glycosides (Rebaudioside M), held short so the roast stays in front. No sucralose, no acesulfame-K, and no caffeine anhydrous: the 100mg comes from the coffee. One level 36g scoop makes a 12 fl oz coffee, hot or iced; each 1kg resealable bag makes about 28, which is 27.78 divided exactly. The full declaration, ingredient by ingredient, is published on the Transparency Record; batch documents attach there as they arrive.

Iced: one level 36g scoop into 12 fl oz of cold water or milk, shake 15 to 20 seconds, pour over ice. Hot: 3 fl oz cool water, whisk smooth, then 9 fl oz hot water, not boiling. Either way it's a 12 fl oz coffee in under a minute. Dry powder tipped straight into hot black coffee will clump, ours included, which is what the cool water is for.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

The three things people ask first.

  • Q1Will it clump?

Iced, no. One level 36g scoop into 12 fl oz of cold water or milk, shake 15 to 20 seconds, pour over ice.

Hot is the one that needs a method, because protein and hot coffee genuinely fight each other. Whisk the scoop into 3 fl oz of cool water until it is smooth, then top up with 9 fl oz of hot water. Ten seconds, and it pours clean.

Drop dry powder straight into hot black coffee and it will clump. So will every other protein on the market, and we would rather tell you that than let you find out.

Why hot coffee and protein fight, and how we settled it →
  • Q2Does it taste like protein powder?

Chalk is not a flavor, it is a mixing failure. Coarse particles that never fully dissolve leave grit on the tongue, and people call that chalky. Mix it properly and most of the texture question answers itself. The rest is the recipe: this is a coffee formula, not a whey tub with cocoa in it.

On sweetness: 0g of added sugar, sweetened with monk fruit extract and steviol glycosides (Rebaudioside M), held deliberately short so the roast stays in front. No sucralose and no acesulfame-K, which are the two the category's own reviews describe as chemical or metallic. Dark Mocha runs espresso-deep with dark cocoa body and a smooth caramel finish. Original Latte leads cocoa and caramel with roasted almond warmth and a clean finish.

Both are a coffee that is rich, not a dessert that is brown.

The full ingredient declaration for both flavors is published on the Transparency Record, with batch documents attaching there as they arrive.

  • Q3Is $59.99 a lot for a bag?

It is the biggest number on this site, so here is the arithmetic.

One 1kg bag holds about 28 coffees, at one level 36g scoop each. Divided exactly, 1,000g at 36g is 27.78 coffees. That is $2.16 a coffee at one bag, and $1.80 a coffee at three. A protein latte at the coffee shop runs about $6 to $7.

You're not buying a bag. You're buying about 28 coffees.

THE ARITHMETIC

One scoop, or the whole counter.

Cost a gram of protein is the row that matters, because it is the only one that survives a change of serving size. The two rows above it are the numbers it is made from, so you can check it.

LOKT MIX compared with a coffee shop protein latte, coffee plus a separate protein, and a premium bottled protein coffee.
Measure LOKT MIX A coffee shop protein latte Coffee plus a separate protein A premium protein coffee in a bottle

Two honest notes

A shelf-stable protein shake from a warehouse club is cheaper than this and carries more protein. It also tastes like a protein shake. If price a gram is the only thing you are solving for, buy that.

And if you already own good beans and a tub of whey, doing it yourself is cheaper still. It is also the exact combination that clumps, which is why "how to add protein to coffee" is a question people keep having to ask.

Comparison figures are the published prices of comparable products at the time of writing and move with the market. LOKT figures are ours and are exact: $59.99 and $149.99 divided by 27.78 and 83.34 coffees, at 20g of protein each.

THE HOT QUESTION

Protein and hot coffee are natural enemies.

Whey unfolds above 65°C, which is 149°F. Coffee sits at about pH 4.9, which is almost exactly where dairy protein loses its charge and drops out of solution. Tip dry powder into black coffee straight off the boil and it will clump. That is chemistry, not a defect, and any brand telling you otherwise is guessing.

Two things settle it. MIX is a complete dairy protein, whey isolate plus milk protein isolate, rather than a bare whey isolate on its own. The milk protein carries casein, and casein holds together at temperatures whey will not. It is the same reason a café latte does not curdle under a steam wand. A milk protein is not a compromise against a purer isolate here. It is the specification choice that makes a hot cup possible at all.

The second thing is ten seconds of method. A little cool water first, whisk to a smooth slurry, then top up. Hydrated protein does not clump. Dry protein does.

  • 3 fl ozCool water first
  • WhiskTo a smooth slurry
  • 9 fl ozHot water, not boiling

The caveat, because you would find it out anyway

Skip the slurry and you will get lumps. Pour water straight off the boil onto dry powder and you will get lumps. Let the kettle stand a minute, make the slurry, then top up. That is the whole trick, and if you do not do it, the drink will tell you.

One more thing, since it comes up. Heat changes how protein behaves, not what it is. The amino acids are unchanged. Twenty grams stays twenty grams.

A hot LOKT MIX being whisked smooth in a mug, the slurry step of the hot method

Hot, made the way the method says. 3 fl oz cool water, whisked smooth, then 9 fl oz hot water.

THE COUNT

Twenty-eight coffees. One level scoop each.

A 1kg bag divided by one level 36g scoop is 27.78 coffees, which we call about 28. That number is the entire reason a $59.99 bag is a $2.16 coffee, so it is worth being exact about what it depends on.

Level, not heaped. A heaped scoop can carry 45g instead of 36g. That turns 28 coffees into 22, and $2.16 a coffee into $2.73. The scoop in the bag is the measure. Draw it level with the back of a knife and the bag lasts what it says it lasts.

Want it gentler? A half scoop makes a lighter cup: 50mg of caffeine and 10g of protein, and the bag stretches past fifty. One proper cup or half of one. Your dial, not ours.

  • 1,000gOne bag
  • ÷ 36gOne level scoop
  • = 27.78Coffees, which we call about 28

We divide by 27.78, not 28, everywhere we quote a price a coffee. The two cents are yours.

Close macro of LOKT MIX Dark Mocha protein coffee powder, showing the grind

Your protein powder was never designed for coffee.

Most protein coffee is a gym product doing a coffee impression: chalk, froth, and a "mocha" that never met cocoa. LOKT MIX starts from the cup.

Freeze-dried arabica, not spray-dried. Freeze-drying leaves larger crystalline granules and keeps more of the aromatics, which is why it tastes closer to something brewed. It is the more expensive way to make instant coffee and it is the only reason to bother with instant at all.

The protein was chosen to disappear into that rather than sit on top of it. And the 100mg of caffeine comes from the coffee, not from a bag of caffeine anhydrous poured in afterwards. That is the difference between a coffee that carries protein and a protein that mentions coffee.

Hot works. That was my whole test. Slurry first, exactly like the instructions, and it drinks like a proper mocha that happens to carry 20g of protein.

      Brandon · Founder, LOKT

    • ★★★★★

The espresso note is real. Dark, a little cocoa, sweetness that knows its place. My old powder tasted like a milkshake doing an impression; this tastes like my order.

One scoop replaced two things on my counter. Breakfast got twenty minutes shorter and I did not lose the coffee.

Eleven days in and the bag is holding pace for about 28 cups. The per-cup math checked out in my kitchen, which is the only place it counts.

    WHERE IT GOES

The bag earns its size three ways.

    • The morning you skip breakfast

A coffee you were making anyway, carrying 20g of protein. It is not a meal and it is not pretending to be one.

    • The three o'clock

Iced, in the time it takes to fill the glass. 100mg of caffeine, which is one real coffee's worth and not a pre-workout.

    • After training

Cold water, shake, done. No blender, no second drink, nothing to rinse.

    The rest of the questions.

100mg a prepared serving, from the freeze-dried arabica rather than from added caffeine. That is one proper cup's worth, not a drip pot's, and nothing like a pre-workout. Want it gentler? A half scoop makes a lighter cup: 50mg of caffeine and 10g of protein. One serving as directed, and count caffeine from every source.

A complete dairy protein: whey isolate plus milk protein isolate, which carries casein. That is a deliberate choice and not a cheaper one. Casein is what holds together at temperatures whey will not, and it is the reason this has a hot method at all. A bare whey isolate is a purer protein and it is the wrong protein for a hot cup.

No, and we would not sell it that way. It is a coffee that carries protein. If it happens to stand in for a breakfast you were going to skip anyway, that is a side effect and not the pitch.

About 28 coffees. One a day, every day, is four weeks. Five a week, which is what a real coffee habit usually looks like, is nearer six.

Reseal it, keep it dry, use a dry scoop. The enemy is moisture, not time: one drop of water starts a clump. The one place not to keep it is the cupboard above the kettle, because steam gets in every time you open the door. Stored cool and dry, it holds well past the life of one bag.
