Eight places a can waits

A cup has to be made. A can just waits. One can, twenty pouches, no cup and no kettle. It does not need a machine, a queue or a free hand, so it tends to end up wherever you were already going.

01 · The kitchen counter

Before the grinder is out and before the kettle has boiled. Some mornings do not have twenty minutes of ritual in them.

02 · The jacket by the door

Goes in the pocket with the keys and the card, picked up on the way past without anyone having to think about it.

03 · The backpack side pocket

The slot that was cut for a water bottle and holds nothing else properly. A can sits in it and stays there.

04 · The gym bag

Packed on Sunday with the shoes and still there on Thursday. Nothing in the bag to spill, nothing that has to be finished first.

05 · The study carrel

Four more hours of reading, and the counter two floors down shut at six. It waits on the desk without going cold.

06 · The workbench

Hands in a glove, or covered in something. A mug is the wrong tool on a bench with no clear surface left on it.

07 · The dashboard

Sits in the tray by the gearstick, where a cup would slide. Reachable before you set off, or while safely parked, with nothing to balance or set down.

08 · The nightstand, away from home

A 6am alarm in a room where the coffee is a sachet and a plastic kettle. It travelled in the same bag it always does.
